Eating in Singapore – Weekend Dim Sum Brunch @ Mitzo

Weekend Dim Sum Brunch @ Mitzo

Mitzo is the modern Chinese restaurant at Grand Park Hotel in Orchard Road.  It’s deco is modern contemporary and not at all what one would expect of a Chinese restaurant.  It is famed for its BBQ Honey roast pork which in my opinion is one of the best in Singapore.

Mitzo has a accompanying bar which is fun and cool and is a great hangout place with friends for an evening drink too.

On weekends, Mitzo offers a Dim Sum ala-carte buffet brunch at $68++ per adult.  Children from 6-12 get a 50% discount.  They serve high quality refine dim sum.  Not your usual tea house dim sum.

As part of the buffet, each person gets to pick one abalone, lobster and bamboo clam dish.  Each of these seafood item is offered in 3 different cooking style which you can choose from.  The same option was given to DD who was paying child price.

For the abalone, among the 5 of us, we had 2 stir-fried XO abalone with asparagus, 2 abalone with tofu and one abalone fried rice. All were delicious! ?

For the lobster, all of us had the baked lobster with cheese except DS1 who chose the lobster with peanut sauce as he does not take cheese.

For our bamboo clams, all 5 of us decided to having them done with minced garlic.

The must have dish whenever we come to Mitzo is the BBQ Honey Roast Pork (char siew).  It is caramelised on the outside so there is a nice crunch when you bite into the meat.  The meat is slightly fatty so it is never dry.  Such a sinful dish, but oh so good ?!

As part of the brunch, they do not search the Crispy Pork Belly as a stand-alone dish which you can get ala-carte.  The buffet version is served with a bun.  Pretty good but fills you up really quickly because of the bun.  We shared it.

Another specialty of Mitzo is the crispy duck roll so we decided to try it.  But unfortunately we did not think it was any special.  I felt the wrap around the duck was oil and makes the dish a bit  “jelak” (Overwhelmingly rich?)

This is a dim sum lunch so we had to have some all-time favourites.  We had the har kow (prawn dumpling), siew mei (prawn and pork dumpling), deep fried prawn dumpling and custard bun.  All did not disappoint.

A speciality dim sum here is the escargot cheese puff.  It is very pretty.  Each puff is made in the shape of a snail.

We could order some stir fried dishes too.  So we had the beef cubes in black pepper sauce and the stir fried scallop with egg white and milk.  The stir fried scallop was ok, the the beef cubes were very good and we went for additional servings.  Each serving is is very small.  Just good for 1-2 person.  Which is good so that you can try many different types of dishes.

For fillers, we had the fried rice with scallop and the congee with scallop.

The speciality dessert here is the Hokkaido Cheese Milk Tart.  You squeeze a little lemon over the freshly baked tart and they taste wonderful!  Not to be missed!

We also had other desserts.  I love the Chilled Aloe Vera Osmanthus Jelly best.  DD likes the deep fried Chocolate liqueur dumpling.  Liquor taste is not very strong.  It just taste like dark chocolate because of the slight bitterness of liqueur. We also had the chestnut cake which was only so so.

Overall a very enjoyable and fulfilling brunch. Not cheap but you get what you pay for.  In fact, I would say it is pretty good value for the quality of food we had.

If this is too heavy for you, Mitzo serves a Dim Sum Set Lunch on weekdays too.  You get a choice of 3 dim sum (2 pieces each), a daily soup and dessert for $28++.  If you need a more substantial lunch, you can go add $10++ for a bowl of braised vermicelli with lobster.  The noodles are very good with very flavourful broth.  I have brought both clients and friends for the Dim Sum Set lunch and all liked it too. ?
