Eating in Singapore – Best Russian Food @ Shashlik

Best Russian Food @ Shashlik

If you are craving Russian Shashlik of beef, then you must head to Shashlik in Singapore.  Located at Far Eat Shopping Centre in Orchard Road, this restaurant is nothing fancy, but is an institution among foodies in Singapore.

It was started by a group of Hainanese sailors, I understand, but is now taken over by a second generation of one of its original founders.

I have been eating at this restaurant for more than 20 years and was glad to find that after the second generation owner took over, there has been some renovation done to update the restaurant, but did not take away the original look of the place.  Not a fancy restaurant but pretty cosy.

Believe it or not, one of the things I like at Shashlik is the sweet bun that they serve.  It is normally served warm and soft and goes so well with butter.

The must have soup here is the Russian Borshch soup ($7).  The serving is huge so we normally share this between 2 persons so that we leave room for main course and dessert.  The soup is served with generous chunks of beef.  I know of a friend who likes to come here just for the soup and bread for lunch!

DS2 didn’t want the Borshch soup.  He went for the Onion soup ($6) instead.  He said that it was good.

For starter, we shared the escargot ($16).  DS1 doesn’t take escargot.  He just bring himself to eat “snails”. ?

DS2 had the beef stroganoff.  He said that it was very tender and delicious.

For DH and I, the must have here is the Shashlik of Beef ($32).  Made with lean tenderloin, it is tasty and tender.  I understand that the meat is marinated for 24 hours before being served.  It comes in a skewer and the server removes the skewer and places it in a hot plate just before it is served to you.

For dessert, 4 of of us shared the Baked Alaska ($24).  It was just nice for us as the serving was quite big.  The menu states that it is for two, but you have to really be game for a large serving of the ice cream and meringue for 2 person to finish this.  The server pours the rum and light the fight at the table.  I like the taste of flames meringue. ?

It was a satisfying dinner as always.  We were here on a public holiday evening and they did not serve their famous oxtail stew which is another favourite of mine.  The Oxtail stew, originally only available during lunch is now available on weekends too. So I tell myself that I need to come back again on a weekend for it!
