Things to do in Singapore – Art Science Museum @ Marina Bay Sands

Art Science Museum @ Marina Bay Sands

During the one week Sept school holidays earlier this month, I decided to have a girls’ day out with DD.  I discussed with DD and we agreed to visit the Art Science Museum at Marina Bay Sands since we have never been there.  We decided to start our outing with lunch at the DC Comics Superhero cafe.

After lunch, we headed to the Museum.  It is located in the lotus shaped building along the promenade of Marina Bay Sands.  The ticket counter is at basement 2.  There were 2 exhibitions going on at the museum.  The Future World Exhibition and the Big Bang Exhibition.  Ticket price differ for the 2 exhibitions.  There is also a combo ticket available.  We decided to just see the Future World Exhibition.  It  cost SGD14 for Singaporean adults and SGD7 for child under 12.  Click here for details of the ticket prices.  Every Friday, children enter free except during Singapore School holidays and public holidays.

The Future World Exhibition is also located at Basement 2 of the Museum.  It is an exhibition of interactive art works meant to inspire one’s imagination.

The exhibition starts with Nature.  There are 4 installations in this section which shows the interaction of flora and fauna and how human can interupt this fine balance.

The second part of the exhibition is Town.  There are many interactive activities here.  Kids can create a city with bridges, rivers, roads and rail tracks and see the city they create project on the screen in front of them.

The most interesting section I feel is when visitors can colour and design trucks and UFOs on preprinted templates.  Then these templates are scanned and the trucks and UFOs will appear on the screen of the city, traveling through the city.

There is also a similar forest version where frogs and chameleons can be designed and projected in the ground and fishes and sea creatures projected on the underwater scene.  It was fun and DD and I had a great time designing our trucks, UFOs, fish, seahorse, frog and  chameleon.

After this section, there is Park, where there is a ballscape.  The most interesting exhibit here is a screen of falling old Chinese characters.  If you touch these characters, pictures of that character will appear, like “mountain”, “sun”, “elephant”, “wood” etc.

The last section is Space.  There are millions of lights hung from the ceiling and the lights change according to rhythm.  It was beautiful.  There is an iPad at the side and visitors can influence the movement of the lights from the iPad.

Overall, it was an enjoyable visit much enjoyed by DD and I.  The exhibits showcase how human can influence our environment in a fun way easily understood by kids.  Definitely worth a visit for families with kids under 12, and even for adults too.
